Kispanadi River was a trading state carrying out commerce with India and the Malaysian states. Because of its isolation, it was left alone by the Burmans and Mon to develop by itself. The height of the Arakan state and Mrauk U was in the 16th and 17th centuries when it carried out significant trade with nations including Portugal to the extent that it became rich and rose on the radar screen of the Burman emperors in Mandalay. There are paintings on the ceiling of some of the temples depicting these heady days and glorifying the wealth of the nation. The Burmans eventually did conquer Mrauk U taking the Golden Buddha for which it was known to Mandalay.
